Villasimius, The fascination of the Sea

Villassimius is located on the top of the south-east
of Sardinia. Its territory of 56 squared kilometers,
has 35 squared kilometers od beaches, coves and
islets close to the coast.
Since the dawn of the last century
Villassimius has changed its economy: it has been transformed
from a small agropastoral area into one of the capitals of
the tourism in the south of Sardinia.
It has a well developed port at about three kilometers from the inhabited centre, a
structure capable of hosting approximately 800 boats together
with shops and tourist services.Worth mentioning are the
Archaeological Museum and The Town Library: the first was
founded in order to diffuse the inheritance brought to light by
the archaeological excavations, the second, to be found inside
the Palazzo Civico, has eighth thousand volumes, an internet
point and special sections devoted to the sea, the area,
foreign languages.

The Biblioteca has housed the Centre of
museum documentation since 1996. Along the coasts it is
possible to catch a glimpse of the numerous towers nd fortresses
used in the past to contrast the dangers from the sea:
la Torre di San Luigi (Tower of San Luigi) in Serpentara, Torre
di Porto Giunco in isola dei cavoli, Fortezza Vecchia (the old
fortress) which overlooks the granite cape of Capo
Carbonara.
Since 2000 Villasimius has housed the second
marine park in Italy, Parco geomarino (the geo-marine park),
which covers the entire coast area, islands included, with different
degrees of protection, where it is possible to practice
sport fishing, underwater photography and navigation.
Many
are the opportunities to have fun thanks to the several clubs
and discos on the seafront and in the surroundings of the
town, and the handcrafts shops, delicatessen’s, ice-cream
parlours, and boutiques open until late in the town centre.
