History and environment
the great riches of Silius

Silius lies on a inclined plane of the eastern valley
of Montixi. The lowest part of the village is at 546
metres above sea level, while the highest part is at
605 metres. The municipal territory presents areas of great
geological interest. In fact, the mines of Silius offer remarkable
mineralogical samples, appreciated both in Italy and
abroad. The south-eastern regions of Sardinia had an important
mining past, but only the mines of Silius are still active.
They are one of the most important European fluorite fields.
At about four kilometres from the village, you can admire the
ruins of the Medieval castle of Sassai. From the top of the
tower you can enjoy a wide horizon. You can see Silius and
the roads, descry the village of Ballao and a long stretch of
the river Flumendosa, distinguish the valleys and the streams.
An observer located on the castle was able to check
any movement of enemy troops and timely prepare defense.
Of naturalistic interest is the park “Is Alinos”, or “Alineddus”,
whose name derives from the presence of spontaneous
plants, the alders, called alinos in the local language. Inside
this area we find two springs: “Is alinos”, that he is the main
one, and “Sa cea manna”, the secondary one with inferior
capacity.
Silius is famous for the goodness and abundance of spring water. For the lovers of nature walks, it’s worth visiting
a locality called Valle di Rio Padenti. What makes this
valley unique, beside the rocky mountains that dominate it, is
the torrent, called “Anna Lai”, that in its course has modelled
the stone, creating small cascades that form natural small
lakes of particular beauty. The vegetation is still uncontaminated:
you can admire numerous and majestic secular holmoaks,
real secular monuments. The Nuragic Shuttle situated
in locality “Sa cea manna” is another place of remarkable
geologic interest. It’s an enormous arenaceous-conglomeratic
block approximately six metres long, that lies, almost
suspended, on other sandstone blocks.
