Armungia, atmosphere and culture
Armungia stands on a hill at 365 metres above
sea level, in the central part of Gerrei, a mostly
mountainous inner region of south-west
Sardinia. It lies at 65 kilometres from Cagliari and 30 from
Muravera and its beautiful beaches.
Visitors cannot avoid to be enchanted by the silence of
the woods and the scents of the country. Several longtrunked
tree woods can be found in the areas of
Murdega, Is Storis, Miali and Is Forreddus. The latter is a
municipal reforestation company of 130 hectares, with
cycling tracks, rest areas and all the facilities visitors
might need in order to enjoy lovely picnics or walks in the
green. Apparently the town was founded by the Punics
and it should owe its name to a leader named Aretusa.
Armungia is rich in nuraghic testimonies: in the centre of
the residential area stands a nuraghe with a conical trunk
shape. According to Giovanni Lilliu’s studies the nuraghe
dates back to the Sardinian Middle Bronze Age (1500-
1400 B.C.) Armungia is an open air museum thanks to
the several historical/archaeological monuments and the
traces of day-to-day culture present along its small streets.
The ethnographic museum, Emilio Lussu’s house, the
forge, the Nuraghe and the small houses all around are
micro-testimonies of a complex and vast culture which
gives a symbolic value to the heritage and the identity of
the community.
The Museum system consists of the historical-ethnographic
Museum, “ Sa Domu de is Ainas” (The house of
tools), “la Bottega del Fabbro”(The Forge), the Urban
Nuraghe and the Church of Beata Vergine Immacolata.
